KABUL/ISLAMABAD, September 1, 2025 – A powerful earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan on Sunday, August 31, causing widespread devastation and a tragic loss of life. Tremors were also felt strongly across Pakistan.

Earthquake Details

  • Magnitude: 6.0 on the Richter scale.
  • Epicenter: 27 km east-northeast of Jalalabad, near Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa border.
  • Depth: Only 8 km, making the quake highly destructive.

Casualties and Damage in Afghanistan

  • At least 812 people have been killed, with over 2,800 injured, according to Afghan officials and international agencies.
  • Kunar and Nangarhar provinces were the worst hit. In Kunar alone, more than 800 deaths and 2,500 injuries were reported.
  • Entire villages collapsed, as most homes made of mud and stone could not withstand the tremors.
  • Roads and bridges have been destroyed, while landslides and aftershocks continue to block rescue efforts.

  • The quake was strongly felt in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Peshawar, and even Lahore.
