Pakistan Army Rescues 28,000 People as DG ISPR Outlines Major Flood Relief Efforts

ISLAMABAD, August 27, 2025 — Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, flanked by Information Minister Attaullah Tarar and the Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), briefed the nation on the Pakistan Army’s flood relief operations across the country. The press conference highlighted the scale of the humanitarian crisis and the military’s frontline role in rescue, relief, and infrastructure restoration.

Rescue and Evacuation Efforts

  • Acting on the directives of Field Marshal Asim Munir, the Pakistan Army has rescued over 28,000 flood victims.
  • A major rescue operation in Kartarpur is underway, where army boats are evacuating stranded residents.
  • Troops remain deployed in flood-hit areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

Martyrdom of Soldiers in Relief Operations

  • DG ISPR confirmed that two Pakistan Army soldiers embraced shahadat while two others sustained injuries during rescue missions in harsh weather and rugged terrain.
  • Lt. Gen. Chaudhry said: “The Pakistan Army stands shoulder to shoulder with the people. The sacrifices of our soldiers are for the safety and relief of fellow Pakistanis.”

Military Deployment and Assets

  • 1 Engineer Brigade, 19 infantry and medical units, and an urban search and rescue team are actively engaged.
  • Army Aviation helicopters have conducted 26 sorties, despite adverse weather, to airlift stranded families and deliver aid.

Medical Support and Humanitarian Aid

  • The Army has set up 29 medical camps, treating over 20,700 patients in Punjab, KP, GB, and AJK.
  • Over 225 tons of rations have been distributed to flood-hit communities.

Restoration of Roads and Bridges

  • The Pakistan Army has restored three key bridges (two in KP, one in GB) damaged by floods.

  • The Karakoram Highway (KKH) has been fully reopened, reconnecting cut-off northern regions.

Security and Vigilance Maintained

  • Lt. Gen. Chaudhry emphasized that flood relief efforts have not compromised national security.
  • Army posts along the working boundary with India remain fully manned, with strict vigilance maintained.
  • Counter-insurgency operations are also continuing to ensure hostile elements do not exploit the natural disaster.

Current Flood Situation in Pakistan

  • Multiple rivers are at critical flood levels.
  • Chenab (two headworks), Ravi (one headwork), and Sutlej (one headwork) are at “exceptionally high flood” levels.
  • Indus River (five headworks) is under “low flood” monitoring.
  • The DG ISPR warned of further risks, as heavy rainfall is expected in the coming days.

National Resilience in the Face of Disaster

Pakistan’s military and civil institutions continue to coordinate relief operations, with NDMA, provincial governments, and the armed forces working jointly. The DG ISPR reaffirmed: “The Pakistan Army will continue to safeguard both the people and the state — in relief operations and on the borders.”
