DG ISPR: Army Expands Relief Operations
- The Pakistan Army, under directives of the Chief of Army Staff, has intensified rescue and relief operations nationwide.
- Army teams have evacuated 6,903 people and provided medical care to over 6,300 patients.
- Deployment:
- 8 units deployed across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
- 2 battalions engaged in relief work in Buner.
- Army Aviation conducting rescue and supply missions in cut-off areas.
- Infrastructure Restoration: The Karakoram Highway, earlier blocked at eight points, has now been fully cleared. Restoration work continues in KP and Gilgit-Baltistan.
NDMA Chairman: National Scale of Disaster
- Casualties: Since the start of the monsoon season, 670 people have died and over 1,000 injured in rain-related floods and landslides.
- Weather Warning: A new spell of heavy rains is expected until August 23. Contingency measures are already in place.
- Rescue Operations: In the past four days, 25,000 people have been rescued and relocated to safer zones.
- Coordination: NDMA is working in real time with provincial governments and relevant institutions to ensure a unified response.
Information Minister: National Catastrophe Declared
- Federal-Provincial Unity: Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the federal government, NDMA, and armed forces are running rescue efforts in close coordination with provinces.
- PM’s Directives: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has declared the situation a “national catastrophe” and ordered all state institutions to work collectively for relief and recovery.
The floods have hit Karachi, KP, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Punjab especially hard. With heavy rains forecast, authorities warn the next 72 hours will be critical.
