Two New Polio Cases Confirmed in Pakistan, 2025 Tally Rises to 21

Islamabad, August 18, 2025 – Pakistan has reported two new cases of polio, according to the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health (NIH).

New Cases

  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P): A six-year-old girl from Union Council Pattan, Kohistan district.
  • Sindh: A 21-month-old girl from Union Council Matli-2, Badin district.

  • Total cases so far in 2025: 21
  • Provincial breakdown:
    • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa – 13 cases
    • Sindh – 6 cases
    • Punjab – 1 case
    • Gilgit-Baltistan – 1 case

Next Steps in Eradication Efforts

  • A sub-national vaccination campaign is scheduled for September 1–7, 2025.
  • Target: 28 million children under five years of age.
  • Coverage: 99 districts nationwide.

Pakistan remains one of only two countries in the world, alongside Afghanistan, where polio is still endemic. Authorities emphasize the importance of timely vaccination and community participation to eliminate the disease once and for all.
