Lahore — The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) on Monday staged a protest march from the Punjab Assembly to Charing Cross on The Mall, denouncing the recently passed 27th Constitutional Amendment and terming it an attack on judicial independence.
PTI lawmakers, led by the party’s secretary-general Salman Akram Raja, first submitted a requisition in the Punjab Assembly demanding a debate on the amendment. The group then proceeded to march toward Charing Cross, holding party flags and placards reading “We reject 27th constitutional amendment.”
At the protest site, visually challenged citizens also joined the demonstration, chanting slogans and urging the government to fulfill its promises of employment. The participation of the group added a social dimension to what began as a constitution-focused protest.

Addressing the protesters, Raja vehemently criticised the amendment, claiming it undermined the judiciary’s autonomy. He argued that the new law had “separated judges who could take a stand for the poor,” asserting that a “subservient judiciary can never serve the oppressed.”
He further said that PTI stood firmly for “the respect and integrity of the judiciary,” and vowed that the party would continue its resistance. “The PTI will not sit silent and will keep fighting on the roads and every forum for the restoration of judiciary’s respect, the release of founder chairman Imran Khan, and the rights of the people,” he said.
Raja also expressed solidarity with the visually impaired participants as well as unemployed youth, emphasising that PTI and Imran Khan “stand with every citizen seeking respectable employment.”
Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly, Moeen Riaz Qureshi, also addressed the rally, stating that the protest was held on the directions of the Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP). He strongly condemned the passage of the amendment, calling the sitting administration a “Form-47 government.”

Qureshi alleged that the government intended to alter the National Finance Commission (NFC) award through the amendment, warning that such a move would deepen provincial grievances.
The protest concluded peacefully, with PTI leaders promising continued public mobilisation until, in their words, the amendment is reversed and constitutional balance is restored.
