NAROWAL — August 28, 2025 — Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Lt. Gen. Inam Haider Malik, briefed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on the worsening flood situation in Punjab during their joint visit to flood-hit areas.

NDMA Briefing Highlights

  • Unprecedented Monsoon: Lt. Gen. Malik described the 2025 monsoon as the result of combined weather systems from the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea, and the West, calling its intensity and duration “greater than in past years.”
  • Rising River Levels: He reported high floods in the Chenab, Sutlej, and Ravi, with an “exceptionally high” flood level at Head Ganda Singh Wala on the Sutlej.
  • Proactive Evacuations: Thanks to the early warning system, timely evacuation of residents and livestock was carried out, which minimized loss of life.
  • Risk to Sindh: The NDMA warned that Punjab’s floodwaters would flow downstream, raising the threat of a high flood in the Indus River and possible large-scale damage in Sindh.

Government’s Response

  • Prime Minister Shehbaz and Chief Minister Maryam expressed their determination to invest in water storage infrastructure, including new dams, to mitigate future flood and climate-related disasters.
  • Both leaders praised the coordinated rescue and relief operations by the NDMA, PDMA, and the Pakistan Army, highlighting the timely evacuation efforts that saved lives.

A Call for Long-Term Solutions

The leadership stressed that while the immediate focus remains on relief and rehabilitation, Pakistan must accelerate efforts to strengthen flood defenses and address the climate crisis to prevent such devastating disasters in the future.
