Narratives from the Roof of the World: Bam-e-Dunya Film Festival Champions Mountain Culture and Climate Awareness

Dec 17, 2025 | Fashion & Entertainment

The majestic Karakoram range provided the backdrop this week for a powerful confluence of art and environmental advocacy as the Bam-e-Dunya Film Festival concluded at Karakoram International University (KIU) in Gilgit. Coinciding with International Mountain Day, the festival showcased the unique cultural heritage, creativity, and acute climate vulnerabilities of Pakistan’s high-altitude regions.

Bam-e-Dunya, meaning ‘Roof of the World’, refers to the vast region that includes Gilgit-Baltistan, a landscape rich in biodiversity and essential water resources. This film festival, organized by WWF-Pakistan and the GB Tourism Department among other partners, has established itself as a critical platform for emerging filmmakers from Gilgit-Baltistan, Chitral, and Balochistan.

Themes of Ice and Resilience

The festival’s central theme for the year was “Glaciers Matter for Food, Water and Livelihood in the Mountains and Beyond.” This focus drove the submissions, which included short films and documentaries exploring subjects from sustainable agriculture and climate resilience to the preservation of local folk cultures. The event drew a large audience, including government officials, academics, and community leaders, signaling the growing importance of visual storytelling in climate communication.

The winners of the documentary competition were praised for their compelling narratives and visual impact:

First Place: Breath of Ice by Tanveer Alam

Second Place: She Can by Hafiza Ali

Third Place: Soul of the Mountains by Sapna Zameer

The success of films like Breath of Ice highlights the local youth’s commitment to documenting the rapid changes affecting the Himalayas, Karakoram, and Hindu Kush mountains, a region often described as the “water tower of Asia.”

Art as a Tool for Advocacy

The festival demonstrated the transformative power of film beyond entertainment. By connecting filmmakers and local community leaders, the platform encourages collaborative efforts to address socioeconomic and ecological challenges.

Nisar Ahmed of WWF-Pakistan encapsulated the event’s mission, stating, “This festival is not just about films; it’s about connecting people and ideas to create a better future.” Through the lens of art, the Bam-e-Dunya Film Festival ensures that the stories and concerns of Pakistan’s mountain communities are not only preserved but are amplified to policymakers and the broader public.
