DUBAI — September 16, 2025: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has cancelled the scheduled pre-match press conference ahead of Pakistan’s Asia Cup encounter against the United Arab Emirates (UAE), deepening the crisis sparked by the controversial Pakistan-India clash earlier this week.
The cancellation came as the PCB escalated its dispute with the International Cricket Council (ICC), accusing match referee Andy Pycroft of violating the “Spirit of Cricket” during Sunday’s match by allegedly instructing the captains not to shake hands at the toss.

Pakistan’s Asia Cup Participation Under Question
The PCB revealed it has not yet decided whether Pakistan will continue in the Asia Cup. PCB spokesperson Amir Mir stated:
- Consultations are ongoing regarding Pakistan’s participation.
- A final decision will be announced by Wednesday.
- The decision will prioritize “Pakistan’s interests above all else.”
Despite the cancellation of the press briefing, team officials confirmed that Pakistan’s practice session at the ICC Academy in Dubai went ahead as planned.
PCB’s Complaint Against ICC Official
The PCB lodged a formal complaint to the ICC, seeking Pycroft’s removal from the tournament’s match officials’ panel. Concerns raised include:
- Pycroft allegedly preventing captains from shaking hands at the toss.
- Umpires permitting Indian players to leave the field post-match without the customary handshake.
- Perceptions that the match referee acted under influence from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Team manager Naveed Akram Cheema formally expressed these grievances to both Pycroft and tournament director Andy Russel. The PCB has hinted at the possibility of withdrawing from the tournament if Pycroft continues officiating Pakistan’s matches.
Confusion Over ICC’s Response
Indian media reported that the ICC had dismissed Pakistan’s complaint. However, PCB officials denied receiving any official communication from the ICC regarding the matter.
Cricket news outlet Cricbuzz quoted PCB sources as saying the board was still awaiting a formal response. Meanwhile, speculation intensified as Pycroft was scheduled to officiate Pakistan’s upcoming match against the UAE.
PCB Chairman’s Strong Remarks
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi underscored the board’s hardline stance, tweeting: “There is nothing more important to me than the honour and prestige of my country.”
This statement added fuel to speculation that Pakistan may pull out of the Asia Cup if its concerns are not addressed.
What Lies Ahead for Pakistan in Asia Cup?
- Next Match: Pakistan are slated to face UAE in Dubai today.
- Super 4 Stage: A potential rematch against India is lined up for Sunday, if Pakistan progresses.
- Match Officials: Pycroft and Richie Richardson are the two referees assigned by ICC for this tournament.
While Pakistan remain favourites against UAE, the uncertainty over their participation casts doubt on the team’s immediate future in the Asia Cup.
