Field Marshal Asim Munir Receives Guard of Honour at GHQ After Historic First as Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces

Rawalpindi, December 8, 2025 – Field Marshal Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff and the country’s newly appointed first Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), was presented a grand guard of honour by contingents of the Army, Navy and Air Force at General Headquarters this morning.
Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu stood alongside as the national anthem echoed across the parade ground — a powerful symbol of unified command under one leader for the first time in decades.

Key Highlights

  • Guard of honour presented jointly by all three services in recognition of the new CDF office
  • Historic restructuring completed through the 27th Constitutional Amendment and changes to Pakistan Army Act 1952
  • Office of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) abolished after nearly five decades
  • Operational, administrative and strategic authority of the armed forces now consolidated under the CDF
  • Field Marshal Munir’s current tenure deemed recommenced from the date of CDF notification

A New Chapter in Military Command Structure

The ceremony marks the formal implementation of sweeping reforms introduced last week. The 27th Amendment to Article 243 of the Constitution merged the roles of army chief and supreme commander of the joint forces into a single, powerful office of Chief of Defence Forces.
With the abolition of the CJCSC position — in place since 1976 — Pakistan has moved toward a more integrated command model similar to several modern militaries worldwide.
Recent amendments to the Pakistan Army Act also provide legal cover for the incumbent to serve in the dual role until December 2035, if reappointed or extended by the president on the prime minister’s advice.

As smartly turned-out troops marched past and the Field Marshal took the salute, the quiet pride on the faces of officers and jawans reflected the armed forces’ complete backing of the historic transition.
The nation watches with confidence as Pakistan’s military enters this new era under unified leadership committed to safeguarding sovereignty and territorial integrity.
