KARACHI, October 28, 2025 — The Institute of Business Management (IoBM), a private university in Karachi, has reinstated a female student whose rustication sparked widespread protests among students, marking one of the most significant demonstrations in the institution’s three-decade history.
The university’s decision came on October 26, shortly before students were set to stage a second protest outside the campus. Earlier in the week, hundreds of students had gathered at IoBM’s main administration block, chanting slogans and demanding justice for the student, who alleged she was expelled after attempting to file a harassment complaint against a staff member.
In a statement, the university said the decision to reinstate the student was taken “in the best interest of all stakeholders” to prevent further escalation. A spokesperson confirmed that the step aimed to “avoid aggravating the situation.”

According to the student’s account, the alleged incident occurred when she visited the transport department to collect her student card. She claimed that when she reported the matter, the administration blamed her and her family for misconduct, leading to her expulsion. The university maintained that disciplinary action was taken due to “aggressive behaviour” by the family, not because of the harassment complaint, and noted that she had the right to appeal.
Following the initial protest, IoBM stated that the accused staff member, employed by an external transport contractor, had been removed from duty. However, students rejected the administration’s partial reinstatement offer and called for a complete reversal, arguing that the student was being punished for speaking out.

The eventual reinstatement was hailed by students as a victory for collective action. Activists, including lawyer Jibran Nasir, said the episode underscored the need for stronger harassment redressal mechanisms and independent student representation. IoBM officials said the university would review and strengthen its internal procedures to ensure a safer environment on campus.
