Gaza ‘Genocide’ Exposes Europe’s Failure, Says EU Vice President

European Commission Vice President Teresa Ribera has described Israel’s war in Gaza as a “genocide”, accusing the EU of failing to act or speak with one voice.

• EU divisions: While some member states push for action against Israel, others continue to back it, leaving the bloc unable to agree on meaningful steps. Even within the Commission, deep splits remain.
• Pressure on leadership: Ribera’s statement increases pressure on EU chief Ursula von der Leyen, who has faced criticism for not taking a stronger line. A July proposal to cut EU funding for Israeli start-ups has stalled due to lack of consensus.
• Human toll: According to Gaza’s health ministry figures — considered credible by the UN — over 64,000 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed since October 2023. In contrast, Hamas’s initial attack killed around 1,200 people in Israel.
• Current situation: Nearly two years into the conflict, Israeli forces are once again massed near Gaza City, where the UN estimates almost one million people are living under conditions of famine.

Ribera said the ongoing genocide in Gaza reflects not only Israel’s brutality but also Europe’s moral failure to uphold human rights and international law.
