On Friday, April 3, 2026, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Emir Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman officially announced the launch of a nationwide protest movement against what he described as the “height of oppression”—the government’s decision to hike petrol prices to an unprecedented Rs 458.41 per litre.

“Burying the People Alive”
Addressing a press conference, the JI chief reacted strongly to the Rs 137.24 per litre increase that took effect at midnight:
- Targeting the Vulnerable: He emphasized that the record price—driven by a massive Rs 160.61 petroleum levy—will disproportionately crush students, laborers, delivery workers, and bikers.
- Luxury vs. Austerity: Hafiz Naeem criticized the ruling elite for refusing to reduce their own “luxuries,” such as expensive government vehicles and air travel, while shifting the entire burden of the global energy crisis onto the middle class.
- IMF and IPPs: He accused the government of “robbing the public’s pockets” to pay billions in capacity payments to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and failing to resist IMF pressure for aggressive tax collection.
Nationwide Protest Movement
Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman issued a call to action for the youth and general public:
- Immediate Launch: JI is initiating a series of rallies and demonstrations starting today in all major cities.
- The Goal: The movement aims to force the government to withdraw the recent hike, abolish the petroleum levy, and renegotiate contracts with IPPs.
- Appeal to Youth: He urged the younger generation to “come out and struggle” for a systemic change, warning that without public pressure, the rulers will continue to push the people into further difficulties.
