GUJRAT / LAMPEDUSA — A grim shadow has fallen over the Punjab heartland as families report that at least 20 Pakistani nationals are among the dozens missing after a migrant boat capsized in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Italy. The vessel, which departed from Libya with approximately 120 people on board, succumbed to rough weather and engine failure, marking one of the deadliest maritime disasters for Pakistani migrants since early 2025.

The Sole Survivor: One Pakistani national, identified as Imran Asghar, has been confirmed among the survivors brought to Lampedusa.
-
A Deadly Year: The UN’s International Organisation for Migration (IOM) reports nearly 1,000 deaths in the Mediterranean already in 2026—the deadliest start to a year in over a decade.
The Human Toll in Central Punjab
While the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has yet to officially confirm the identities, local sources and grieving families have identified the missing individuals as hailing from the following regions:
-
Hafizabad & Pindi Bhattian: 11 people.
-
Mandi Bahauddin (Phalia tehsil): 6 people.
-
Sialkot (Sambrial tehsil): 1 person.
-
Gujranwala (Noshehra Virkan): 1 person.
This tragedy is the first major drowning incident involving Pakistani citizens since January 2025, when 40 people lost their lives attempting to reach Spain. The FIA stated it is currently collecting data from respective districts to verify the reports.
Three Days of Horror at Sea
According to the IOM and survivor testimonies, the vessel left Zuara, Libya, in late March but quickly ran into trouble.
-
Engine Failure: The boat was left adrift for three days after the engine failed and fuel ran out.
-
Exposure: Survivors reported a complete lack of food and water as weather conditions deteriorated.
-
Hypothermia: Initial testimonies suggest many victims died of extreme cold even before the boat overturned.
The Italian Coast Guard, supported by a merchant vessel and a tugboat, managed to rescue 32 people, who were subsequently moved to the island of Lampedusa for medical treatment.
A Crisis of “Deadly Journeys”
The IOM has raised a red flag over the escalating death toll in the Mediterranean. Within just the last 10 days, five separate shipwrecks have claimed over 180 lives.
“These tragedies show, once again, that far too many people are still risking their lives on dangerous routes,” said IOM Chief Amy Pope. “Saving lives must come first, but we also need stronger efforts to stop traffickers and expand safe, regular pathways.”
Domestic Impact: A Plea for Action
The incident comes at a time when Pakistan is already navigating a complex regional diplomatic landscape, with the Islamabad Talks between the US and Iran scheduled for April 10. However, the news of these deaths has sparked fresh calls in Pakistan for a crackdown on the human smuggling networks that continue to exploit the economic vulnerabilities of the youth in Punjab’s industrial and agricultural belts
