During the last stretch of January, a significant chapter was added to Pakistan’s art history as the Sadequain Foundation formally donated a collection of original works by the legendary Syed Sadequain Ahmed Naqvi to Galerie Sadequain in Karachi. The donation is part of a strategic effort to institutionalize the preservation of the master artist’s oeuvre, ensuring his invaluable contributions remain in the public domain rather than disappearing into private collections.
A Gift to the Nation
The newly donated pieces span various phases of Sadequain’s prolific career, offering a rare window into his evolving vision. Galerie Sadequain, located within the historic Frere Hall and administered by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), serves as a permanent sanctuary for the artist’s work. By entrusting these paintings to a public institution, the Foundation, spearheaded by Dr. Salman Ahmad, reaffirmed its commitment to making world-class art accessible to the average citizen.

Institutionalizing Excellence
Beyond mere display, this donation enhances the Galerie’s capacity to function as a center for research and education. Cultural observers note that this move is vital in an era where authentic works are often threatened by deterioration or the fake bazaar. By housing these masterpieces in a professionally managed public space, they are preserved for future scholars and art enthusiasts to study the brooding genius of the man who once famously painted the ceilings of this very hall.
