KP Celebrates Pakistan-China Friendship, 75 Years of Partnership

Jan 31, 2026 | Art & Culture, Current Affairs

PESHAWAR — The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government reaffirmed its commitment to the “ironclad” relationship with China during a high-profile ceremony on Friday, January 30, 2026. Organised by the China Window cultural centre, the event marked both the 75th anniversary of Pakistan-China diplomatic relations and the Chinese Spring Festival.

A Foresighted Alliance

Addressing the gathering, Muzammil Aslam, Adviser to the KP Chief Minister on Finance, praised the “principled stand” Pakistan took in 1951 by being among the first to recognize the People’s Republic of China.

  • Enduring Bond: Aslam noted that the relationship has evolved from simple diplomacy into a “living bond” rooted in trust and brotherhood that remains unaffected by global shifts.
  • Equal Partnership: He emphasized that China’s treatment of Pakistan as an equal partner is the primary reason for the immense public respect the country enjoys in Pakistan.

CPEC, The Economic Fortress

The Adviser highlighted the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) as the backbone of modern bilateral ties, providing specific milestones achieved:

  1. Energy Stability: CPEC power projects have been instrumental in reducing the electricity crisis that previously hampered industrial growth.
  2. Infrastructure: A network of motorways and highways now connects the country from north to south, facilitating internal trade.
  3. Strategic Trade: The development of Gwadar Port has solidified Pakistan’s position on the global and regional trade maps.
  4. Future Growth: The focus has now shifted to Special Economic Zones (SEZs), such as the operational factories in the Rashakai Economic Zone, which are expected to drive job creation and industrialisation in KP.

Unity Across Sectors

The ceremony was attended by a diverse group of dignitaries, reflecting the broad-based support for the partnership:

  • Political Leaders: Former governors Haji Ghulam Ali and Iqbal Zafar Jhagra spoke on China’s consistent support during wars and natural disasters.
  • Academic & Religious Figures: Prof. Sadiq Khattak (VC, UET Peshawar) and Bishop Ernest Jacob were present, highlighting the cultural and educational dimensions of the tie.
  • Local Leadership: D.I. Khan Commissioner Dawood Khan stressed the importance of passing this legacy to the youth through media and cultural exchange.

2026 Celebrations

The Peshawar event is part of a year-long series of commemorative activities launched earlier this month:

  • Official Logo: Unveiled on January 4 by Deputy PM Ishaq Dar and Chinese FM Wang Yi.
  • Youth Engagement: A commemorative badge and logo design competition recently concluded in Islamabad, attracting over 2,000 entries.
  • Cultural Diplomacy: Photo exhibitions and cultural festivals are currently touring major cities, including Peshawar and Hong Kong, to showcase shared heritage.

Summary of KP’s CPEC Focus

Sector Milestone / Target

Connectivity North-South highway integration.
Logistics Transformation of Gwadar into a regional trade hub.
Employment Focus on “CPEC Phase 2” to tackle skilled labor migration.
