Zayn Malik is gearing up for his most culturally ambitious project yet with his recent studio album, Konnakol, set for release on April 17, 2026. While the album’s title refers to a South Indian vocal percussion technique, it’s a specific track titled “Nusrat” that has captured the hearts of his South Asian fans.
The Voice That Defined a Genre
In a recent street interview discussing the upcoming record, Zayn opened up about the personal significance of the track. He confirmed that the song is a direct homage to the Shahenshah-e-Qawwali, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Zayn spoke with visible admiration about the late maestro’s vocal prowess, specifically highlighting how amazing and transcendent his voice becomes during live performances.
For Zayn, this isn’t just a casual influence; it’s a connection to the music played in his household growing up, where his father’s love for Qawwali and Sufi music laid the foundation for his own artistic identity.

The Jeff Buckley Connection
During the interview, Zayn also touched upon the fascinating “bridge” between Western alternative rock and Eastern spiritual music. He noted how the legendary Jeff Buckley was famously inspired by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.
By acknowledging Buckley’s reverence for the maestro, Zayn is highlighting a lineage of global artists who looked toward Pakistani music not just for “exotic” sounds, but for its emotional depth and technical brilliance. Zayn’s own love for Pakistani music is front and center on Konnakol, which features a snow leopard, an animal native to Pakistan, on its cover as a symbol of his heritage.

More Than a Sample
Unlike his earlier subtle nods to South Asian music, “Nusrat” is expected to be a full-bodied celebration of the genre. With Konnakol, Zayn is moving away from standard pop structures and leaning into what he calls ‘me songs’, tracks that feel authentic to his roots. As the countdown to April 17 begins, “Nusrat” stands as a reminder that some voices are so powerful they continue to inspire across generations, continents, and genres.
