CM Maryam Nawaz Departs for Brazil to Attend COP30 Climate Conference

LAHORE – November 7, 2025

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz departed for Belém, Brazil, on Thursday to attend the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), where global leaders are set to review progress under the Paris Agreement and discuss strategies to curb global warming. The summit will continue until November 21.

According to an official government statement, the chief minister will present Punjab’s climate initiatives, including the “Suthra Punjab” (Clean Punjab) campaign and e-mobility projects, during various sessions at the conference. “CM Maryam departed for Belém, Brazil, to participate in COP30. During the event, she will brief participants on Punjab’s flagship projects,” the statement said.

Before her departure, Ms Nawaz posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Departing for COP30 Belém, Brazil — taking Punjab’s climate transformation journey from Suthra Punjab to E-Mobility, AQI Leadership, and Wildlife Protection to the world stage.” She added that she was proud to represent “a new wave of climate leadership from Pakistan rooted in innovation, inclusion, and shared responsibility for our planet.”

Sources said the CM is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with global leaders and representatives of major international financial institutions, including the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), World Bank Climate Change Division, Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

While the Punjab government highlighted the importance of the visit for advancing environmental policy and sustainable development, it has remained tight-lipped about the composition of the chief minister’s delegation. Reports suggest that Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb, who also oversees the environment ministry, may be accompanying Ms Nawaz along with senior bureaucrats, but officials have not confirmed the details.

Additionally, the government has not disclosed whether the CM is traveling via a chartered aircraft or a commercial airline. No official footage of her departure from Lahore airport has been released, and Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari did not respond to media queries.

Observers note that the subdued communication surrounding the trip may stem from criticism following Ms Nawaz’s earlier Japan visit in August, which drew controversy over the alleged inclusion of private individuals and family members in the official delegation.
