Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah on Monday approved a Rs25 billion Karachi Road Reconstruction development package to rebuild 315 internal streets and 60 major roads across Karachi, directing authorities to expedite construction and ensure the proper installation of streetlights and drainage systems throughout the city.
Karachi’s road network has faced long-standing deterioration, worsened by recent rains that left major thoroughfares riddled with potholes and hazardous for commuters. The Karachi Road Reconstruction funding decision was announced during a high-level meeting chaired by the chief minister and attended by Local Government Minister Nasir Shah, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah, and other senior officials.
“After heavy rains, Karachi’s roads are in a state of disrepair,” the chief minister said, according to a statement from his spokesperson, Abdul Rashid Channa. “Mega projects are underway, causing traffic problems. I want development work to be accelerated so that people do not suffer further.”

Mayor Wahab briefed the meeting that 315 internal streets were severely damaged and required urgent reconstruction. CM Murad ordered the approval of all related schemes to Karachi Road Reconstruction and instructed officials to ensure that work begins without delay. He further directed authorities to build a proper and sustainable drainage system in both the internal streets and the 60 main highways identified for rehabilitation.

Discussing the financial scope of the plan, Wahab informed the meeting that the estimated cost of development work is Rs25bn. The chief minister emphasised that funding was not a hindrance. “Funds are not the issue; I want immediate and quality work for the citizens,” he said.
During the meeting, CM Murad also congratulated the mayor on the inauguration of new reverse-osmosis water filtration plants in Keamari, reiterating that clean water access, improved roads, and strong law and order remained core priorities for the provincial government. He added that traffic accidents in the city had decreased following the launch of the Sindh Safe City Project.
Earlier in March, Mayor Wahab had urged the federal government to provide Rs25bn to strengthen the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and support the development needs of Pakistan’s largest city. The new provincial initiative marks a significant step toward addressing Karachi’s chronic infrastructure challenges.
