PESHAWAR: Three Federal Constabulary (FC) personnel were martyred on Monday when terrorists launched a suicide attack on the force’s headquarters in Peshawar’s Saddar area, officials said. The incident occurred shortly after 8am on one of the city’s busiest roads, coinciding with the weekly assembly at the main compound.

According to Capital City Police Officer Dr. Mian Saeed Ahmad, three militants attempted to storm the headquarters. One bomber detonated himself at the gate, while two others tried to enter but were neutralised by vigilant FC personnel. Two additional FC personnel were injured during the attack. A clearance operation was promptly carried out, and authorities said heightened security measures had prevented a larger tragedy.

The Jamatul Ahrar faction of the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the attack. The FC headquarters, located near a military cantonment, includes barracks, hospitals, and residential quarters.

Emergency Response and Public Disruption

Lady Reading Hospital received 11 injured personnel, while Khyber Teaching Hospital treated one. The city’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service temporarily suspended operations on the main corridor, though feeder routes continued to function.

This attack marks the second major assault on a security installation in Peshawar in the past three years. In February 2023, a suicide blast at the Police Lines mosque killed 84 people.

Political Leadership Condemns Attack

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the attack, praising the FC for its timely action. “Timely action taken by security forces saved us from major harm,” he said, reaffirming the government’s commitment to eradicating terrorism.

President Asif Ali Zardari offered condolences to the families of the martyrs, stating that “externally backed Fitna-al-Khawarij cannot weaken Pakistan’s unity, resilience or resolve.” Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi paid tribute to the martyred personnel and highlighted the bravery of FC forces in foiling the attack. KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi said such cowardly attacks would not weaken morale and pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice. PPP leader Sherry Rehman lauded the FC personnel for preventing the attackers from entering the compound.

Rising Terror Threat in KP and Balochistan

The attack comes amid a surge in militant activities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, following the TTP’s end of its ceasefire with the government in November 2022. Recent attacks have targeted police and security forces, with six soldiers martyred in September during a foiled assault on the FC Headquarters in Bannu. The military has labelled these incidents as orchestrated by Indian proxy groups linked to the TTP.

Authorities have launched a full investigation into Monday’s Peshawar attack, while security forces remain on high alert across the province.
