Islamabad Blast Death Toll Rises to 36 as Victims are Laid to Rest

Feb 7, 2026 | Current Affairs

ISLAMABAD — The death toll from the suicide bombing at Imambargah Qasr-i-Khadijatul Kubra has tragically risen to 36 as of Saturday afternoon, February 7, 2026. Hospital officials at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and HBS Hospital confirmed that several victims succumbed to their injuries overnight.

The attack, which occurred during the height of Friday prayers, is now officially the deadliest act of terrorism in the federal capital since the 2008 Marriott Hotel bombing.

Medical teams are working around the clock, but the situation remains critical for many survivors.

  • PIMS Hospital: Dr. Aneeza Jalil confirmed the total at PIMS reached 33 after a 21-year-old man passed away today. Nine patients remain in “very serious” condition.
  • HBS Hospital: Dr. Riaz Janjua confirmed three additional deaths at his facility.
  • Total Injured: Over 160 people were initially moved to hospitals; while many have been discharged, dozens are still undergoing surgeries for shrapnel wounds and severe burns.

Final Rites Amidst Heavy Security

Emotional scenes were witnessed in Tarlai today as the first wave of funerals took place.

  • Collective Prayers: Thousands of mourners gathered at the Imambargah—the very site of the blast—at 11:00 AM to offer funeral prayers for the victims.
  • Community Grief: Many of the deceased belonged to the Hazara community and families from Parachinar and Gilgit-Baltistan, who had settled in Islamabad’s suburbs seeking safety from regional conflict.
  • Security Cordon: Large contingents of Islamabad Police and paramilitary Rangers provided a multi-layered security ring around the funeral processions to prevent further incidents.

Investigation: The “IS” Claim and the Peshawar Link

While the city mourns, forensic teams have made significant breakthroughs in identifying the network behind the carnage.

  • Responsibility: The Islamic State (IS) has officially claimed responsibility via its Telegram channel, releasing a photo of the assailant holding a weapon.
  • Bomber Identified: Investigators used the NADRA database to identify the bomber’s severed head. He was a resident of the Gunj area in Peshawar’s walled city.
  • The “Afghan” Connection: Preliminary forensic data suggests the attacker traveled to Afghanistan multiple times in the months leading up to the strike.
  • Raids in Progress: Police have already detained several relatives of the suspect in Nowshera and Peshawar to trace his handlers and potential facilitators in the twin cities.
