Islamabad — The federal government intends to transfer former prime minister Imran Khan from Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail to the newly constructed Islamabad prison once it is completed in approximately two months, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi announced on February 13, 2026.

Speaking at the passing-out ceremony of Islamabad Police recruits, Naqvi confirmed that the Islamabad jail — currently under construction — will provide full medical facilities. “The Islamabad jail will be completed within two months. All medical facilities are available inside the jail,” he said. “Since Imran Khan was sentenced by a court in Islamabad, he will be moved to Islamabad Jail.”

Key Highlights

  • Imran Khan to be shifted from Adiala Jail to new Islamabad prison.
  • Transfer planned within two months upon jail completion.
  • Islamabad currently has no operational jail facility.
  • Minister Naqvi: Move aligns with sentencing jurisdiction.
  • Imran detained in Adiala since September 2023.
  • Recent SC order: Specialist eye exam and family calls by Feb 16.
  • Imran reported 15% vision remaining in right eye.
  • Imran Khan has been held in Adiala Jail since September 2023.

The announcement follows heightened concerns over his health, particularly after a Supreme Court submission by PTI counsel Advocate Salman Safdar on February 12 reported the former prime minister stating he has only 15 per cent vision left in his right eye despite treatment.

On February 13, a two-member Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi ordered a medical team to examine Imran Khan’s eye and permitted telephonic contact with his sons Kasim and Sulaiman, both to be completed by February 16. Imran’s sister Aleema Khan later noted that no written order had been received by Friday afternoon, delaying implementation.

The interior minister described the Islamabad Police passing-out as a significant milestone, noting the rapid completion of a specialised anti-terrorism training course in three months instead of six. “We did not previously have a dedicated force to combat terrorism,” Naqvi said. “This initiative started three months ago… Credit goes to the officers who trained them.”

The planned transfer is expected to align with Imran Khan’s legal proceedings in Islamabad courts while ensuring access to required medical care in a purpose-built facility. No specific date beyond the two-month construction timeline has been confirmed.

This development occurs amid ongoing legal and political discussions surrounding Imran Khan’s detention conditions and health. Authorities have not released further details on the new jail’s completion status or exact transfer logistics. Updates will follow as construction progresses and court directives are implemented.
