Govt reduces diesel price by Rs32

ISLAMABAD (April 17, 2026) — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved a significant reduction of Rs32.12 per liter in the price of high-speed diesel (HSD), providing a much-needed reprieve for the country’s transport and agriculture sectors. The decision comes as global crude oil prices plummeted by nearly 13% following the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to commercial shipping.

Highlights

  • Diesel reduced to Rs353.43 (from Rs385.54).
  • Petrol unchanged at Rs366.58 for the current weekly cycle.
  • The new prices came into effect at midnight, April 18.
  • Brent crude fell to approximately $86.52 a barrel, the lowest since early March.

In a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), PM Shehbaz emphasized that his priority is to ensure the benefits of declining international oil prices reach the common man “as quickly as possible.” While petrol prices remain stable this week, the heavy reduction in diesel is expected to lower the operational costs for freight, public transport, and heavy machinery, potentially easing inflationary pressures on food and essential goods.

The “Hormuz Factor”

Market analysts attribute the sharp drop in fuel prices to a sudden easing of geopolitical tensions. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that the Strait of Hormuz is now open for commercial vessels, a move echoed by US President Donald Trump. This development has effectively reversed the “war-premium” that had kept prices at record highs throughout March and early April.

A month of volatile pricing

This latest cut follows an unprecedented sequence of price revisions in April. After a massive 55% hike earlier in the month due to the regional conflict, the government has moved aggressively to provide relief as diplomacy gains ground. Last week, the PM had already slashed diesel and petrol prices by Rs135 and Rs12, respectively, citing the same downward trend in global benchmarks.
