Crime Trends in Lahore and Karachi: A Simple Comparison

Jul 9, 2025 | Crime & Law

Recent data comparing crime rates in two of Pakistan’s largest cities—Lahore and Karachi—reveal a clear difference. Lahore has seen a significant decline in crime, while Karachi continues to face major challenges, particularly in the form of street crimes.

Crime Rate in Lahore

In the first two months of 2025, Lahore recorded 4,686 crime cases. This is a significant improvement compared to 12,739 cases in 2023 and 9,566 cases in 2024. The data shows a clear downward trend.

Cases of armed robbery, or dacoity, fell sharply. Only 10 such cases were reported in early 2025. This is 52% lower than in 2023 and 9% lower than in 2024. Robbery cases also decreased to 853, representing a 79% drop from 3,984 cases in 2023 and a 25% decrease from 2,969 cases in 2024.

Street crimes, including mobile and purse snatching, also went down in Lahore. In early 2025, 839 snatching cases were reported, representing a 69% decrease from 2,690 in 2023 and 51% lower than the 1,724 cases reported in 2024.

Motorcycle thefts also declined. Lahore saw 1,849 cases of bike theft in early 2025. This represents a 56% decrease from 4,178 cases in 2023 and a 41% decrease from 3,115 in 2024.

Similarly, vehicle theft dropped to 262 cases in 2025. This represents a 42% decrease from 449 cases in 2023 and a 39% decline from 432 cases in 2024.

Burglary cases also fell. Only 688 incidents were recorded, representing a 35% decrease from the 1,065 cases reported in 2023.

Karachi Still Struggling

While Lahore’s numbers show a clear improvement, Karachi’s crime situation remains serious. Although overall street crimes decreased by 28.18% in early 2025 compared to the previous year, the city still reported a high number of cases.

In the first two months of 2025 alone, Karachi reported 10,356 street crime incidents. That averages over 5,000 cases per month.

In January 2025 alone:

  • 1,585 mobile phones were snatched, 11.15% more than in December 2024.
  • 617 motorcycles were snatched, up by 25.15%.
  • 3,413 motorcycles were stolen, a 7.84% increase.
  • Thirty-one cars were stolen, representing a 29.17% increase.
  • A total of 151 cars were stolen, representing a 2.03% increase.

These numbers indicate that, although overall crime may be slightly down, key crime categories are still on the rise.

Reasons Behind the Crime Rates

Experts and officials believe that economic hardship, joblessness, and easy access to illegal weapons are some of the main reasons for the high crime rate in Karachi. These factors push many people toward crime and make it harder for police to control the situation.

In contrast, Lahore has managed to improve its law and order situation. Police officials credit several reasons for this improvement:

  • Targeted crackdowns on known criminals.
  • Use of digital surveillance tools.
  • Better training and planning.
  • Merit-based postings within the police force.

Lahore’s Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Operations, Faisal Kamran, said that smart policing and efficient leadership have made a real difference. He also pointed out that, despite handling major events like the Champions Trophy and the Horse and Cattle Show, the Lahore police remained focused on crime prevention.

While Lahore’s efforts appear to be paying off, Karachi continues to face a tough fight against street crime. The government, police, and local authorities in Karachi must intensify their efforts. Reducing unemployment, controlling illegal arms, and improving police resources could help tackle the issue.

If Karachi adopts a similar strategy to Lahore—combining innovative technology, strong leadership, and focused policing—it may also see a drop in crime. Until then, the safety of Karachi’s residents remains a significant concern.
