ISLAMABAD – At least twelve people were injured in a suspected gas explosion at the Supreme Court building in Islamabad on Tuesday morning, police officials said. The blast occurred in a canteen located in the basement of the court complex, briefly causing panic among staff and visitors.

Islamabad Inspector General of Police (IGP) Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi told reporters that the explosion took place at around 10:55am. “A gas blast occurred at a canteen in the basement of the Supreme Court building,” he said. According to the police, nine of the injured were shifted to the Polyclinic Hospital, while three others were taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims).

The IGP confirmed that two of the injured were in serious condition, having sustained burns on 80 per cent and 30 per cent of their bodies respectively. “The rest suffered minor injuries, most of which are burn injuries,” he added.

Videos circulating on social media showed damaged sections of the canteen with shattered furniture, debris, and blood stains on the floor. Footage from outside the building depicted people, including lawyers and court employees, rushing out of the premises as emergency teams arrived.

Police, bomb disposal squad members, and Rescue 1122 personnel cordoned off the area and began an investigation shortly after the incident. “Initial probe revealed that there had been complaints of gas leakage in the canteen and nearby tea room for the past three days,” IGP Rizvi said. He added that technicians were repairing malfunctioning air conditioners when the accumulated gas ignited, triggering the blast.

“The technicians repairing the air conditioners were the most affected,” Rizvi said, emphasizing that no traces of explosives were found at the scene.

Authorities have launched a detailed inquiry into the cause of the explosion, while the injured remain under treatment at the city’s main hospitals.
