Govt Defends Care as IHC Orders New Medical Board for Imran Khan

Mar 13, 2026 | Politics, PTI

While Federal Minister Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry maintains that the government is fulfilling its responsibility by providing top-tier medical facilities to the PTI founder, the legal and medical battle over Imran Khan’s health reached a critical junction on Friday, March 13, 2026.

The Government’s Position

Speaking to private media, Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry dismissed allegations of negligence.

  • Security & Care: He stated that the state is providing full security and the “best available consultants” for Khan’s treatment.
  • Transparency: The Minister reaffirmed that medical procedures are conducted according to jail rules and that providing these facilities is a legal and humanitarian obligation of the state.
  • Political Context: He urged the PTI leadership in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to cooperate with federal policies on security and regional de-escalation rather than politicizing the former PM’s health.

The IHC Ruling: A “Middle Ground”

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) issued its written verdict late Thursday, disposing of the petition to shift Khan to Shifa International Hospital.

  • Medical Board: Chief Commissioner Islamabad has been directed to form a board including Dr. Muhammad Arif (PIMS) and Dr. Nadeem Qureshi (Al-Shifa Trust).
  • The Decision Power: The court clarified that under Rule 197 of the Prison Rules, the power to move a prisoner rests with the Executive (Government), not the court.
  • Relief for Family: The court ordered that Dr. Nadeem Qureshi must remain in contact with Khan’s family regarding his treatment progress to address concerns of “secrecy.”

The Reality of the Vision Loss

The core dispute remains the actual state of the 73-year-old leader’s eyesight:

  • The Defense (PTI): Senior Counsel Sardar Latif Khosa argued that Khan has lost 85% of his vision in the right eye, leaving him with only 15% sight due to delayed intervention for CRVO.
  • The State (PIMS): A report from PIMS medical experts on March 3 claimed that Khan’s vision has “improved remarkably” following two doses of anti-VEGF injections.

PTI to Challenge in Supreme Court

Dissatisfied with the IHC’s refusal to transfer Khan to a private facility, the PTI has officially announced it will challenge the verdict in the Supreme Court (SC). The party demands:

  1. Access to personal physicians for independent check-ups.
  2. Direct treatment at Shifa International Hospital.
  3. Full transparency regarding the medical reports, which they currently “do not trust.”
