Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appointed Justice Yar Muhammad as caretaker CM of Gilgit Baltistan after the previous assembly completed its five-year term at midnight on November 25. Under the GB Order 2018, general elections must now be held within the next 60 days.

End of a Turbulent Five-Year Term
The 2020 elections had brought PTI to power with Khalid Khurshid as the first elected CM. His disqualification over an alleged fake degree in 2023 led to a coalition government headed by Haji Gulbar Khan.
In its final session on Monday, the outgoing assembly rushed through a dozen bills and adopted landmark resolutions, including repeated demands for provisional provincial status for Gilgit-Baltistan.
During its tenure, the house passed 63 bills and 114 resolutions reflecting the region’s aspirations.
With a respected retired judge now at the helm, Gilgit-Baltistan heads into election mode, promising a smooth and neutral transition for the mountainous region’s 1.5 million voters.
