KARACHI: The Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) on Thursday bolstered its sewerage management capacity with the addition of 20 new suction and jetting machines, commonly known as “blue trucks,” bringing the city’s total fleet to 142. The machines are crucial for clearing blocked sewerage lines, particularly during the monsoon season.
The announcement was made during a ceremony marking the inauguration of KWSC’s first police station, the suction machines, and a dedicated electric vehicle (EV) charging station. KWSC Chairman and Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab highlighted the city administration’s focus on modernising critical infrastructure, emphasising that the projects form part of a broader vision for sustainable urban development set by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari.
“Significant progress has been made to improve the sewerage system at a cost of Rs630 million,” Wahab said. He added that three modern service centres are being established at Karsaz, Sakhi Hassan, and the SITE Industrial Area/Haroonabad, with new parking zones being developed to ensure timely deployment of suction and jetting machines. A major parking hub for 25 vehicles is under construction in Haroonabad to enable prompt response in areas like Manghopir and Keamari.

On the occasion, Wahab also laid the foundation for KWSC’s own police station, aimed at addressing water theft efficiently. Previously, the corporation relied on external police support, causing operational delays. The new station will have dedicated staff and work in tandem with a special tribunal established under government law, enabling FIR registration and legal proceedings related to water theft to be conducted independently.
KWSC CEO Ahmed Ali Siddiqui, Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad, Parliamentary Leader Karamullah Waqasi, and other officials attended the ceremony. Wahab noted that once the special court becomes fully operational, the corporation’s activities will be managed more efficiently, transparently, and with greater focus.

In addition, the KWSC inaugurated an electric vehicle charging station for employees, part of a wider initiative to promote EV adoption and reduce carbon emissions in Karachi. The mayor said plans are underway to expand public charging infrastructure across the city, following the successful model implemented in the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation.
The combined initiatives — fleet expansion, dedicated police and tribunal services, and EV infrastructure — signal a comprehensive push by the city government to improve urban services, enhance environmental sustainability, and combat water theft across Karachi.
