The Incident: Dilapidated Roads & Rash Driving
Rescue 1122 and police officials arrived at the scene, but all five students had died on the spot.
- The Cause: Reports indicate the trailer driver was attempting to overtake when he rammed into the bike.
- Infrastructure Issues: Kot Addu Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Bilal noted that the victims were riding a single motorcycle on the “dilapidated” Layya Road. He highlighted that he had previously requested the National Highway Authority (NHA) to repair the road, as the infrastructure of the newly created district is not yet up to standard.
Law Enforcement Response
- Arrest Made: The trailer driver, who initially fled the scene, has been apprehended and a case for rash driving has been registered.
- Official Inquiry: Regional Police Officer (RPO) Muhammad Azhar Akram has sought a formal report from the District Police Officer (DPO) and directed traffic police to intensify the crackdown on speeding.
- Community Grief: An atmosphere of deep mourning prevails in Chak No. 560. Local residents have staged protests, demanding the immediate dualization of Layya Road and stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
Safety Advisory
Authorities have urged parents to avoid allowing multiple children to travel on a single motorcycle, especially on high-traffic corridors like Layya Road and MM Road, until safety infrastructure is improved.
