COAS Munir Says Pakistan Will Respond to Any Aggression as It Did During May Conflict with India

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir has said that Pakistan will respond to any party “imposing war” on it in the same manner it responded during the brief but intense military escalation with India in May this year, Daily Jang reported on Sunday.

The army chief made the remarks during a luncheon hosted in honour of Jordan’s King Abdullah II, who is on a two-day official visit to Pakistan. Field Marshal Munir described Pakistan’s response during the May conflict as a moment in which “Allah helped us raise our heads high”.

“When a Muslim puts their trust in Allah, He turns the dirt thrown at the enemy into missiles,” he was quoted as saying. He added that he performs his duties in accordance with divine guidance and credited Pakistan’s defensive response to God’s grace. “This army is an army of Allah and our soldiers fight in His name,” Munir said.

Tensions between Pakistan and India spiked sharply in early May after an attack in Pahalgam, located in Indian-occupied Kashmir, triggered New Delhi’s launch of “Operation Sindoor” on May 7, targeting sites inside Pakistan and resulting in civilian casualties. India blamed Pakistan for the attack but did not present evidence publicly. Islamabad retaliated with “Operation Bunyanum Marsoos”, leading to intense artillery and drone exchanges before a ceasefire was brokered through US-led diplomatic efforts.

The military standoff marked one of the most serious escalations between the nuclear-armed neighbours in recent years, heightening fears of a wider conflict before the ceasefire took hold.

Field Marshal Munir has since repeated warnings to New Delhi regarding the risks of confrontation. Addressing a passing out parade at the Pakistan Military Academy in Kakul last month, he cautioned India’s military leadership that “there is no space for war in a nuclearised environment”. He also urged India to resolve longstanding disputes “as per international norms”.

“We will never be intimidated nor coerced by your rhetoric,” the army chief had said at the time. “We shall respond decisively, beyond proportions, to even a minor provocation without any qualms.”

The COAS’s latest comments come amid continued diplomatic and military tensions in the region, underscoring that Islamabad views the situation as requiring vigilance as well as preparedness for future contingencies.
