Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Saturday to support flood-hit citizens in every way possible. He gave the order during a meeting with NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said Sharif told the NDMA to use all available resources for relief work. He also asked the authority to stay closely coordinated with provincial disaster agencies.

PM Praises Use of Technology in Disaster Response
During the meeting, Sharif praised the NDMA’s use of artificial intelligence and modern technology at the National Emergencies Operation Center. He said these tools are helping the country respond faster to weather emergencies. Lieutenant General Malik briefed the prime minister on the country’s current weather picture. He focused mainly on flooding brought on by this year’s monsoon rains.
Malik also updated the prime minister on relief efforts already underway. He described the steps being taken to help flood victims rebuild and recover. He said NDMA’s relief operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir would continue with federal government support.
Death Toll Climbs as Monsoon Season Continues
According to data from NDMA, between June 26 and August 14, 155 people have died, and 460 have been injured in recent monsoon rains. Monsoon rains generally fall across Pakistan from the month of June through September. They bring welcome relief from summer heat and help refill the country’s water supplies. But heavy rain also triggers floods, landslides, and displacement. These risks grow sharper in areas with poor drainage or dense populations.
The warning signs are not easing yet. On Friday, the Flood Forecasting Division of the Pakistan Meteorological Department warned that stormwater channels linked to the Chenab and Ravi rivers could face high flooding from August 15 to 21. Officials report that water levels in both rivers are rising. They are monitoring the situation closely as the monsoon season nears its end.
