PSX Surges Over 1700 Points in Intraday Rally as Global Oil Prices Drop

Aug 3, 2026 | Economy

KARACHI / ISLAMABAD — The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) kicked off the trading week on a strong note Monday, with the benchmark KSE-100 index surging more than 1,700 points during intraday trade. The bullish momentum brought welcome relief to investors after a difficult July, fuelled by easing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, declining global crude oil prices, and positive domestic inflation signals.

By 11:00 AM, the KSE-100 had climbed a hefty 2,273.78 points from its previous close of 176,094.11 points. Although some profit-taking trimmed the gains later, the index still stood 1,781.72 points higher by 2:18 PM.

Global De-escalation & Domestic Catalysts Drive Rally

Market watchers pointed to a combination of positive international and local factors behind the sharp upswing:

  • De-escalation of US-Iran Tensions: Financial portal Mettis Global highlighted renewed investor confidence after US President Donald Trump announced the resumption of talks with Iran, without setting a strict deadline, and called off planned military strikes.
  • Drop in Global Crude Oil Prices: The easing tensions triggered a significant decline in international oil prices, providing much-needed relief for oil-importing economies like Pakistan.
  • Monetary Easing Expectations: Awais Ashraf, Director of Research at AKD Securities, noted that anticipation of July’s inflation figures dropping into single digits boosted sentiment and raised hopes for interest rate cuts by the State Bank of Pakistan.

The rally marks a turnaround after a challenging month. According to Topline Securities Ltd, the KSE-100 index closed July — the first month of Fiscal Year 2027 — down 4,208 points (-2.3% month-on-month), weighed down by rising crude prices and Middle East instability. Despite the pressure, July maintained a healthy average daily trading volume of 845 million shares worth Rs37.5 billion.

Why PSX’s Bullish Run Matters

A national stock exchange acts as a real-time barometer and forward-looking indicator of a country’s macroeconomic health, institutional stability, and investor sentiment. Market prices reflect not just current performance but also future economic expectations.

1. The Financial Barometer & Economic Symbolism
Sustained market growth signals that listed companies — spanning banking, fertilizers, energy, technology, and textiles — are generating healthy earnings and expanding operations. Rising market capitalisation reflects business confidence and future growth prospects.

2. Lowering the Cost of Capital
A strong stock market enables companies to raise fresh equity capital more affordably, reducing dependence on expensive bank loans. This supports new projects, infrastructure upgrades, job creation, and overall GDP growth.

3. Investor Confidence & Wealth Creation
Bullish trends attract both domestic retail investors and foreign capital. A rising index is often seen as evidence of structural reforms, fiscal discipline, and regulatory stability, boosting consumer spending and broader economic activity.

4. Positive Signals for Pakistan’s Outlook
For Pakistan, a sustained rally on the PSX is an encouraging sign. It suggests the economy is stabilising despite external pressures. Combined with single-digit inflation and potential rate cuts, it creates favourable conditions for investment and long-term growth.
