ISLAMABAD: The Parliamentary Party of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) on Monday called for the withdrawal of cases against its founding chairman Imran Khan and demanded the reconstitution of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), citing concerns over the country’s political and democratic situation.

The demands were made during a meeting of the PTI parliamentary party held at Parliament House under the chairmanship of Barrister Gohar Ali Khan. During the meeting, the party unanimously adopted a resolution seeking the immediate release of what it described as political prisoners, as well as the restoration of family visits for the former prime minister.

According to the resolution, PTI leaders expressed concern that the country was passing through a “sensitive phase” and stressed the need for political stability and adherence to democratic principles. The party reiterated its stance that cases against Imran Khan were politically motivated and should be withdrawn.

The parliamentary party also urged democratic forces across the political spectrum to agree on a new Charter of Democracy. The proposed charter, the resolution said, should aim to ensure transparent, free and fair elections, enabling the public to elect what the party termed their “true representatives”.

In addition, the resolution called for the implementation of the Peace Jirga declaration to help ensure lasting peace in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. PTI leaders have previously argued that dialogue and locally driven initiatives are essential to address security challenges in the province.

The meeting also condemned what the party described as police brutality against the Tehreek Tahafuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan in Punjab. It further criticised obstacles allegedly created for the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister during his engagements in Sindh, terming such actions as politically motivated.

Participants in the meeting paid tribute to Opposition Leader Omar Ayub Khan and PTI members who were unseated, acknowledging their role and sacrifices. The party also praised supporters in Lahore and Karachi for what it described as their continued struggle for democratic rights.

The resolution concluded with a call for unity among democratic forces and reiterated PTI’s commitment to pursuing its objectives through political and constitutional means.
