Police Intervention and Legal Charges
The formal First Information Report (FIR) was registered at the complaint of a patrolling police constable, Deedar Ali. According to the state document, the official observed a group gathering, chanting pro-Hussain slogans, and carrying flags marked with “Jiye Altaf” and references to the 48th foundation day of the All-Pakistan Mohajir Students Organisation (APMSO)—the student wing Hussain co-founded at Karachi University.
The prosecution maintains that the incendiary nature of the demonstration caused immediate hostility, creating an imminent risk of clashes with other political factions in the neighborhood. Police reinforcing units subsequently cordoned off the area and took 11 suspects into custody. The individuals have been booked under PPC Sections 153-A, which pertains to promoting enmity between different groups, and 34, regarding common intention.
Organizational Disavowal and Context
In a public counter-statement, the mainstream MQM leadership distanced itself from the dynamic, claiming that security forces actually detained the workers during an administrative raid at a corporate office located on I.I. Chundrigar Road. The party asserted that the targeted premises carried no functional link to official MQM activities and demanded the immediate release of the detainees.
Public displays supporting Altaf Hussain have faced strict state crackdowns since August 2016, when the London-based founder delivered an incendiary speech containing anti-state slogans that triggered an attack on a local television station. Following that incident, his Pakistani party colleagues omitted his name from the organizational constitution to operate independently.
