Bannu (April 16, 2026) — Three polio workers who were kidnapped by militants on Wednesday have been successfully recovered in the Jhandu Khel area. The safe release was secured through a coordinated effort between the Bannu district police and local tribal elders.

Key Highlights

  • Coordinated action by police and a local jirga led to the safe recovery of the team.
  • Workers were seized during the current nationwide vaccination campaign (April 13–19).
  • The abduction follows a recent fatal attack on polio security personnel in Hangu.
  • Despite a decrease in violence last year, 17 health workers were kidnapped during 2025 campaigns.

Collaborative efforts for a safe recovery

Following the abduction, District Police Officer (DPO) Yasir Afridi spearheaded a strategy that combined professional police action with traditional mediation. By taking local jirga elders into confidence, authorities were able to negotiate the release without further escalation. DPO Afridi confirmed that the workers are now safe, following what he described as a period of intense effort.

Persistent threats to vaccination teams

The abduction underscores the ongoing dangers faced by frontline health workers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. Earlier this week, a police constable was martyred in Hangu while protecting a vaccination party. These teams, who travel door-to-door to reach every child, remain frequent targets for militants despite enhanced security protocols.

The 2026 vaccination campaign

This incident occurred during the year’s first major nationwide drive. While officials noted a general downward trend in violence against polio teams in 2025 due to “foolproof” security measures, this week’s events in Bannu and Hangu have renewed concerns regarding the safety of the thousands of vaccinators currently in the field.
