A major fire broke out early this morning, Monday, March 30, 2026, at a private superstore located on the prominent Zamzama Street in Karachi’s Clifton area. The blaze, which started around 6:00 AM, triggered panic in the neighborhood as thick black smoke engulfed the building.
The Firefighting Operation
Chief Fire Officer Humayun Khan confirmed that six fire tenders were immediately dispatched from the Saddar station.
- The Origin: The fire reportedly started in the basement, with initial findings suggesting a short circuit in an ATM located there.
- Rapid Spread: While the basement fire was initially suppressed, the flames spread to the ground floor through the store’s false ceilings, which acted as a conduit for the fire.
- Challenges: Rescuers faced significant hurdles due to heavy smoke and zero visibility in the basement. Firefighters were forced to use industrial cutters to break through the doors to gain access.
Suspect in Custody
In a sudden development, a suspicious individual was detained by the store’s security guards near the basement entrance during the height of the fire. The suspect has been handed over to the Clifton Police for interrogation to determine if the fire was a result of arson or technical negligence.
