Justice Aminuddin Khan Takes Oath as Pakistan’s First Federal Constitutional Court Chief Justice

Islamabad, November 14, 2025 – In a landmark event marking judicial reform, Justice Aminuddin Khan was sworn in today as the inaugural Chief Justice of the newly created Federal Constitutional Court (FCC), just one day after the 27th Constitutional Amendment became law.

President Asif Ali Zardari administered the oath at a dignified ceremony held at Aiwan-i-Sadr. Attendees included Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Supreme Court Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari.

The oath, recited in English following a Quran recitation, saw Justice Khan pledge unwavering fidelity to the Constitution, impartiality, and justice “without fear or favour.” His appointment, effective immediately upon oath-taking, was notified under Article 175A Clause 3 and Article 175C.

Government sources emphasize that the FCC aims to alleviate the Supreme Court’s caseload, expedite constitutional matters, and bolster judicial independence. President Zardari also appointed six judges to the bench: Justices Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi, Aamer Farooq, Ali Baqar Najafi (from the Supreme Court), K.K. Agha (Sindh High Court), Rozi Khan Barrech (Chief Justice of the Balochistan High Court), and retired Justice Arshad Hussain Shah.

Three Supreme Court judges took their oaths under Justice Khan at the Islamabad High Court. The court’s initial size is set by presidential order, with future expansions requiring parliamentary legislation.

Originally planned for the Federal Shariat Court building, the ceremony shifted due to logistical adjustments and FSC judges’ concerns over relocation. This establishment signals a pivotal shift in Pakistan’s judicial landscape, promoting efficiency in constitutional adjudication.
