KARACHI, Nov 14: A man was killed and another injured on Thursday evening when a speeding minibus rammed into a motorcycle in Korangi, triggering violent protests by enraged residents who set the vehicle ablaze — an incident reflecting the rapidly deteriorating traffic situation in Karachi where fatal accidents have become a daily occurrence.
According to police and rescue officials, the crash took place near Vita Chowrangi when two men riding a motorcycle were struck by a minibus allegedly driven recklessly. Korangi Industrial Area SHO Mohammed Ali Niazi said the victims were rushed to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where 40-year-old Manzoor Raheem succumbed to his injuries while the other man remained under treatment.

The minibus driver fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle. Within minutes, a crowd of agitated residents gathered and set the bus on fire, expressing frustration over what they described as the “unchecked madness” of public transport drivers who routinely violate traffic rules with impunity.
A traffic police officer confirmed that preliminary findings pointed to “reckless and negligent driving” by the minibus driver — a recurring factor behind Karachi’s persistently high number of road fatalities.
Daily Surge in Deadly Accidents
Thursday’s tragedy adds to a growing list of fatal road incidents in the city. Police officials say Karachi has witnessed a sharp rise in fatal traffic accidents over recent months, driven by overspeeding, poorly maintained vehicles, encroachments, absence of pedestrian crossings, and weak enforcement of traffic laws.
Public transport, especially privately operated minibuses, remains at the centre of many such incidents. Drivers often compete for passengers, accelerating dangerously on congested roads. Officials say many of them lack proper training and operate without adequate monitoring by transport authorities.

Traffic experts warn that the city’s road infrastructure — already under strain due to rapid urbanisation — is unable to cope with the increasing volume of vehicles. This has resulted in gridlocks during peak hours and high-speed collisions in off-peak times, especially in industrial zones like Korangi.
Residents say the lack of accountability has emboldened violators. “Every day we hear of someone dying on the road. No one fears the law,” said a witness at the crash site.
Police say efforts are underway to identify and arrest the fugitive driver, while the burnt vehicle has been seized for investigation.
Authorities stressed the urgent need for stricter enforcement, improved public transport regulation, and better road safety awareness to prevent such tragedies from becoming routine.
