Grand Shake-up as Retentions Slashed for New Expansion in PSL 11

KARACHI — The landscape of the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) is set for a seismic shift as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) finalized the retention list for the upcoming PSL 11 on Wednesday, January 28, 2026. In a move designed to accommodate the league’s expansion to eight teams, franchises are facing “heartbreaking” decisions to release long-standing superstars.

The “New Look” PSL 11 Rules

To ensure the two new franchises, Hyderabad and Sialkot, can build competitive squads, the PCB has overhauled the player selection model:

  • The Auction Era: PSL has officially moved from a “Draft” to an Auction-based model, scheduled for February 11, 2026.
  • Retention Cap: Previously allowed 8 retentions, teams can now keep a maximum of only 4 players.
  • One-per-Category Rule: Franchises must pick one player from each category: Platinum, Diamond, Gold, and Silver.
  • No More Loophole: The “Right to Match” (RTM) rule, wildcards, and extra retentions via brand ambassador or mentor roles have been abolished.

The Platinum Dilemma

Because teams can only retain one Platinum player, several iconic partnerships are being forcibly dissolved:

Franchise Likely Retention High-Profile Releases (Into the Auction)
Islamabad United Shadab Khan Naseem Shah, Imad Wasim, Salman Ali Agha, Mohammad Nawaz, Sahibzada Farhan.
Lahore Qalandars Shaheen Afridi Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf.
Peshawar Zalmi Babar Azam Saim Ayub (Reports suggest a difficult choice or total release of both).
Multan Sultans Mohammad Rizwan All other Platinum stars.
Quetta Gladiators Abrar Ahmed Mohammad Amir, Faheem Ashraf.
Karachi Kings Hasan Ali Shan Masood, Shoaib Malik (if categorized Platinum).

Expansion Details: Hyderabad and Sialkot

The addition of Teams 7 and 8 was finalized earlier this month in a record-breaking auction:

  • Hyderabad: Acquired by the US-based FKS Group for PKR 1.75 billion.
  • Sialkot: Acquired by the OZ Group for PKR 1.85 billion.
  • The “Pre-Draft” Advantage: Unpicked players from the existing six teams’ retention lists will be made available to Hyderabad and Sialkot first, allowing them to sign four players each before the grand auction on Feb 11.

Franchise Reactions

While some franchises initially expressed reservations about losing their core “brand identity” players, the PCB’s PSL 11 Auction Workshop successfully convinced owners that a “Grand Reset” was necessary for the league’s longevity and the successful integration of the new teams.

“The expansion is a landmark moment. Releasing these stars is tough, but it ensures the Auction on February 11 will be the most competitive in T20 history.” — Mohsin Naqvi, PCB Chairman
