But the match swung the other way from there. Aisam and Aqeel lost a tightly fought contest 1-6, 7-6, [10-7], settling for silver instead of gold.
Earlier in the tournament, the pair showed real fight in the quarterfinals. They saved two match points against Spain’s Francisco Javier Martínez Baena and Pedro Nieto Orellana before completing a comeback win, 6-7, 7-6, [10-2]. Aqeel Khan claimed another medal of his own, partnering Germany’s Eileen Aranas-Roth in the 40+ Mixed Doubles. Their campaign ended with bronze after a semifinal loss to Portugal’s Gil and Freitas, the same pair that later lost the final to Aisam and Hermann.
Pakistan closed out the two-week championships in Lisbon with four medals in total. The country also won silver in the Men’s 45+ World Team Championships.
