DERA ISMAIL KHAN — In a major move to modernize counter-terrorism and urban policing, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has commenced the installation of a high-tech surveillance network in Dera Ismail Khan. Part of a broader Rs2.25 billion police development package, the project aims to saturate the city with advanced monitoring capabilities to curb militant activity and street crime.

Manpower Boost: The provincial government has approved the recruitment of 600 additional police personnel for D.I. Khan and 200 for Tank to support the digital rollout.
A Tech-Driven Counter-Terrorism Framework
Official sources confirm that 350 cameras are already operational, with 450 more in the integration phase to ensure comprehensive, round-the-clock coverage of sensitive zones and key intersections. Unlike traditional CCTV, this AI-integrated network is designed to act as a “force multiplier” for law enforcement, allowing for real-time data syncing with criminal records.
The reconstruction of key police stations, including City, Cantonment, and Dera Town, is expected to provide a much-needed morale boost to the force operating in the southern districts of the province.
Wildlife Protection: Rare Crane Smuggling Foiled
In a separate operation in the Dera division, the Wildlife Department successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle 20 rare cranes.

The Operation: Acting on a tip-off, a special team led by Sub-divisional Wildlife Officer Malik Saqib intercepted a consignment being illegally transported from Balochistan to KP.

Outcome: The birds were taken into custody, and a suspect was arrested under the Wildlife and Biodiversity Act 2015.

The digital fortification of D.I. Khan is a critical component of the ongoing Operation Azm-e-Istehkam. By integrating digital surveillance with traditional policing, authorities hope to restore public confidence in a region that has faced persistent security challenges from “Fitna al Khawarij” (TTP) sleeper cells.
The move mirrors successful digital policing models in Islamabad and Lahore, adapted for the specific security dynamics of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s southern belt.
