Turkish Airspace Violations by Iran ‘Cannot Be Excused’, Erdogan

Mar 10, 2026 | International-Affairs, Iran

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan delivered a stern diplomatic warning to his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian, on Monday, March 9, asserting that repeated violations of Turkish airspace by Iranian-fired munitions “cannot be excused for any reason.” The phone call, initiated by Pezeshkian, follows the successful neutralization of a second ballistic missile by NATO air defense assets in the Eastern Mediterranean.

NATO Intercepts Second Iranian Missile Over Turkey

The Turkish National Defense Ministry confirmed that a ballistic missile fired from Iran entered Turkish airspace on Monday before being intercepted. This marks the second such incident in less than a week; last Wednesday, a similar munition was neutralized after crossing through Syrian and Iraqi airspace toward Turkey.

Erdogan emphasized that Turkey is being “negatively affected” by a regional war in which it is not a participating party. He made it clear that while Ankara opposes “unlawful interventions” against Iran, it equally condemns Iran’s targeting of neighboring “brotherly countries.”

Conflicting Narratives: Iran Denies Missile Origin

During the call, President Pezeshkian attempted to de-escalate the tension by claiming that the missiles intercepted over Turkey were “not of Iranian origin.” He assured Erdogan that Iranian authorities would launch a “comprehensive investigation” into the trajectory and source of the munitions.

However, Western intelligence and NATO tracking data have consistently pointed to launch sites within Iranian territory, linked to the ongoing Operation Promised Sadiq 4 retaliatory waves.

Diplomatic Condolences and Regional Stability

Despite the military friction, Erdogan expressed “deep sorrow” over the February 28 strike on a girls’ school in Minab, Iran, which resulted in significant civilian casualties. He also reiterated his condolences for the passing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, expressing hope that the transition of power to Mojtaba Khamenei would eventually lead to a more stable and peaceful regional environment.

“The violation of Turkey’s airspace cannot be excused… these actions must end to reopen the door to diplomacy.” — Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Turkey.

Key points from the Erdogan-Pezeshkian call:

  • Turkey’s Stance: Will take “all necessary measures” to protect its borders.
  • Iranian Defense: Claims missiles are not ours; investigation pending.
  • NATO Role: Active deployment in the Eastern Mediterranean successfully protecting Turkish skies.
  • Regional Impact: Turkey warns against the targeting of Azerbaijan, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar.

Turkey’s Diplomatic Mediation Offer

President Erdogan informed Pezeshkian that Turkey is actively working to facilitate a diplomatic “off-ramp” for the regional crisis. Turkish mediators are reportedly in contact with both Washington and Tehran to propose a localized ceasefire that would secure the Strait of Hormuz and stop the accidental or intentional targeting of non-combatant nations like Turkey and Azerbaijan.
