ISLAMABAD — A powerful 5.9-magnitude earthquake jolted major cities across Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the federal capital on Saturday evening, just hours after two separate morning tremors left three people injured in Balochistan.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the evening earthquake struck at 6:35 pm. The seismic activity originated in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region at a depth of 178 kilometers, carrying enough energy to trigger widespread panic.

Tremors were felt distinctly in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Attock, and Chakwal, alongside several KP districts including Swat, Mansehra, Abbottabad, and Shangla. The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) immediately activated its emergency networks to assess structural integrity across major urban centers.

Fortunately, Punjab Rescue 1122 spokesperson Farooq Ahmad confirmed that no immediate casualties or severe infrastructure damage were reported in the province following the evening shockwaves.

The evening seismic event followed a distressing morning in Balochistan, where back-to-back earthquakes of 5.2 and 4.3 magnitude rocked the region. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured the primary morning quake at a higher 5.4 magnitude, striking at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers near Barkhan.

The morning tremors caused direct structural damage in the Musakhail, Kohlu, and Rakhni districts. Local administration officials confirmed that three laborers sustained injuries due to wall and roof collapses. Many rural residents have abandoned their cracked mud houses to set up temporary tents outdoors.

This latest seismic wave marks an intensely active week for regional fault lines. Just a day prior on Friday, a 5.1-magnitude quake shook Kohlu, while a separate 5.4-magnitude tremor was felt across northern Pakistan on Monday.
