ISLAMABAD, Sept. 11: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday granted in-principle approval to declare a climate and agricultural emergency amid ongoing monsoon rains and widespread flooding, Sept. 11, 2025.
Chairing a federal cabinet meeting, the prime minister directed that a session with provincial chief ministers and relevant officials be convened soon to devise a national strategy for mitigating damage from climate change. Members were briefed on losses, with millions of acres of farmland and crops reported destroyed. Proposals for infrastructure restoration, compensation to farmers, and agricultural recovery support were also discussed.

The cabinet paid tribute to officers and soldiers defending the nation’s borders and condemned social media campaigns maligning martyrs and the armed forces. It ordered strict action against those responsible. “The Pakistani nation can never forget the immense sacrifices of its martyrs and their families. I, along with the entire nation, am proud of them,” Shehbaz said. The meeting offered prayers for Maj. Adnan Aslam, who was martyred in the Bannu operation, as well as for the late relatives of federal ministers and former Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani.
The cabinet strongly condemned Israel’s “illegal and heinous” bombing in Doha, voicing solidarity with Qatar’s emir, royal family, and citizens.
Separately, the cabinet approved a Ministry of Petroleum proposal to extend re-gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) connections to long-waiting consumers. Officials noted RLNG will be around 30 percent cheaper than LPG, offering relief to households.
The meeting also endorsed a trilateral inter-governmental framework agreement for a joint feasibility study on a strategic Uzbekistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan rail link, signed last month, which is expected to boost regional trade and connectivity.
In addition, members ratified earlier decisions taken by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), the Cabinet Committee on Inter-Governmental Commercial Transactions (CCoIGCT), and the Cabinet Committee for Legislative Cases (CCLC).
With approval for the climate and agricultural emergency in place, the government aims to finalize a comprehensive plan to safeguard livelihoods, restore farmlands, and strengthen resilience against climate shocks.
