Monsoon Rains Trigger Deadly Flash Floods in AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan

MUZAFFARABAD/GILGIT – August 16, 2025:
Flash floods and cloudbursts caused by monsoon rains have killed at least 21 people and left dozens missing in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB). Rescue operations continue amid heavy damage to roads, bridges, and homes.

Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK)

  • At least 9 dead, with several injured and missing.
  • In Muzaffarabad, a mudslide killed five members of a family; another family of six is feared dead.
  • Neelum Valley has been cut off after floods washed away bridges and roads in Kattan and Lawat, stranding hundreds of tourists.
  • In Jhelum Valley, floods destroyed shops and a flour mill, while landslides blocked key roads to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
  • Casualties include a woman killed by a falling rock in Danna Dilyar and another swept away by floods.
  • Over 400 tourists were rescued from Bagh district after their vehicle was trapped in rising waters.

Gilgit-Baltistan (GB)

  • At least 12 dead, with more feared missing.
  • Ghizer District was the worst hit: floods in Khalti swept away five people and destroyed 20 homes.
  • In Hunza, outburst floods from the Shishper Glacier caused severe erosion downstream.
  • In Baltistan, a bridge in Siltoro Goma was washed away, cutting off access to the village.
  • A woman and a child’s bodies were recovered as the search for others continues.
  • Floods damaged farmland and disrupted power supplies across several areas.

Relief Efforts

The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) in AJK and the GB Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA), with support from the Pakistan Army and Rescue 1122, are leading operations. But blocked roads and continued rain are slowing progress. Officials warn the situation remains critical as more rain is forecast in the coming days.
