Pakistan Seeks Stronger Ties with Malaysia Through Joint Ventures: PM Shehbaz

KUALA LUMPUR (October 6, 2025) — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday expressed Pakistan’s desire to “join hands” with Malaysia for mutually beneficial projects that bring together the expertise of both nations. Speaking at a joint press conference alongside Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Putrajaya, PM Shehbaz highlighted the deep-rooted ties between the two countries and called Malaysia a “second home” for Pakistan.

Prime Minister Shehbaz began his remarks by thanking the Malaysian leadership for their exceptionally warm welcome, saying the hospitality made it feel like a family reunion. He praised Anwar Ibrahim’s vision and leadership for transforming Malaysia into a strong regional economy, adding that Pakistan wished to learn from Malaysia’s experience, particularly in technology, artificial intelligence, and other areas of economic growth.

The two leaders held what PM Shehbaz described as “very productive discussions,” covering a wide spectrum of bilateral and global matters. “Our views converge on almost all important issues,” he noted, recalling that Prime Minister Ibrahim’s previous visit to Pakistan had been a milestone in cementing bilateral relations.

Shehbaz announced that Pakistan seeks to collaborate with Malaysia through joint ventures that leverage the strengths of both nations. He highlighted the presence of over 150,000 Pakistanis in Malaysia who contribute actively to national development and called for tapping into this shared potential to strengthen both economies.

On trade, PM Shehbaz welcomed Malaysia’s interest in importing $200 million worth of halal meat from Pakistan, assuring that all halal certification and market price regulations would be strictly met. He expressed confidence that this trade volume would see a “quantum jump” in the future.

The premier also attended the launch of the Urdu translation of Anwar Ibrahim’s book The Script, which focuses on sustainability, innovation, and research. He described it as a source of inspiration for future generations and emphasized that nations progress through hard work, dedication, and innovation — values that Pakistan aims to inculcate in its youth.

Malaysian PM Lauds Pakistan’s Role on Palestine

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, in his remarks, acknowledged the contribution of Pakistani professionals and students in Malaysia. He announced an increase in rice imports from Pakistan and reiterated interest in facilitating meat imports. He also welcomed cooperation in STEM fields, noting Pakistan’s historical strengths in science and technology.

Anwar praised Pakistan’s clear stance on the situation in Palestine and Gaza. Referring to the broader peace efforts, he said Malaysia and Pakistan both support international initiatives to end violence and pursue lasting peace in the region.

Ceremonial Welcome and Strategic Cooperation

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Shehbaz was received at the Perdana Putra Complex, where he inspected a guard of honour by the Malaysian armed forces. He is on a three-day official visit accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, and Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi.

The visit includes delegation-level talks aimed at boosting cooperation in trade, IT and telecom, the Halal industry, education, energy, infrastructure, and the digital economy. Both leaders are expected to witness the signing of multiple agreements and memoranda of understanding.

According to the Foreign Office, the visit underscores the strong and enduring strategic partnership between Pakistan and Malaysia, grounded in mutual respect and shared interests across various sectors.
