Two Arrested in Northwest Iran for Espionage

Mar 31, 2026 | Iran, USA

On Tuesday, March 31, 2026, Iranian security forces confirmed the arrest of two individuals in the country’s northwestern region on charges of spying for the United States and Israel. The arrests took place in the Osku area of East Azerbaijan province, a region that has seen heightened security since the strike on the Tabriz Petrochemical Company yesterday.

Selling Coordinates for Crypto

According to the semi-official Tasnim News Agency, the suspects are accused of a sophisticated intelligence breach:

  • Targeting Sensitive Sites: The individuals allegedly provided precise geographical coordinates and “sensitive information” regarding military assets and strategic infrastructure to U.S. and Israeli intelligence agencies.
  • Cryptocurrency Payments: Investigators claim the suspects were recruited through online platforms and received payments in cryptocurrency to mask the financial trail of their activities.
  • Judicial Status: Following a specialized operation by the Revolutionary Guards’ (IRGC) intelligence arm, the suspects have been handed over to the judiciary for formal prosecution.

The “Domestic Front” of the Regional War

These arrests are part of a massive internal crackdown following the February 28 outbreak of war:

  • Widespread Crackdown: Over the last 24 hours, Iranian media have reported nearly 1,000 arrests nationwide related to “cooperation with the enemy,” filming sensitive sites, or spreading anti-government content.
  • Northwest Focus: The northwest has become a focal point for espionage investigations due to its proximity to the borders of Turkey and Azerbaijan, which are being closely monitored for regional spillover.
  • Legal Consequences: On the same day as these arrests, the Iranian judiciary announced the execution of two men (Babak Alipour and Pouya Ghobadi) in Tehran for membership in banned opposition groups and “acts of sabotage” during the conflict.
