BHC adjourns proceedings on LG polls postponement

QUETTA: The Balochistan High Court (BHC) on Tuesday adjourned for one day the hearing of petitions seeking the postponement of local government (LG) elections in Quetta, which are scheduled to be held on December 28. The court is set to resume proceedings on Wednesday, December 24.

The petitions have been filed by several political parties, including the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), Awami National Party (ANP) and Pakhtunkhwa National Awami Party (PkNAP). The petitioners have challenged the conduct of LG elections in the provincial capital, citing various legal and administrative concerns.

Although detailed arguments were not taken up during Tuesday’s brief hearing, the adjournment indicates that the court is expected to examine the matter further before the scheduled polling date. The petitions seek judicial intervention to halt or defer the elections, raising questions about preparedness, legal compliance and political consensus surrounding the electoral exercise in Quetta.

The local government elections are part of a broader effort to revive the local governance system in Balochistan, which has faced repeated delays in recent years. However, opposition from multiple political parties has added to uncertainty over the process, particularly in the provincial capital, where political dynamics are often more complex and contested.

Separately, a consultative meeting on proposed amendments to the Balochistan Local Government Act, 2010, was held on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Secretary Local Government and Rural Development Abdul Rauf Baloch. The meeting brought together relevant officials and stakeholders to deliberate on possible changes to the legal framework governing local bodies in the province.

According to officials, the consultative session focused on reviewing provisions of the existing law and discussing amendments aimed at addressing administrative gaps and improving the functioning of local governments. While details of the proposed amendments were not made public, the discussions were described as part of an ongoing process to reform the local government system in line with evolving administrative and governance needs.

The parallel developments — the court proceedings and the consultation on amendments to the local government law — reflect the broader debate surrounding the structure, timing and implementation of local governance in Balochistan. With the LG elections in Quetta less than a week away, the outcome of the BHC hearing is likely to have a significant bearing on the electoral schedule and the future course of local government reforms in the province.

The court’s decision on whether to entertain the petitions substantively or allow the elections to proceed as planned is now awaited.
