Security Breakthrough: Police Repulse Major Ambush in Bannu; 2 Terrorists Eliminated

Jan 26, 2026 | Terrorism

BANNU — In a display of tactical efficiency, the Bannu police on Monday successfully repelled a coordinated militant ambush in the Domel area, neutralizing two terrorists in the process. The high-intensity gunfight occurred during a routine patrol, adding to the string of security operations that have characterized the district’s “peace-first” mission in 2026.

Bannu Ambush & Response

  • The Location: Domel area, Bannu District.
  • Casualties: 2 militants killed; no police fatalities reported.
  • Duration: 20-minute heavy fire exchange.
  • Deployment: APC, QRF (Quick Response Force), and RRF (Rapid Response Force) reinforcements.
  • Seizures: Automatic weapons and a significant cache of ammunition recovered.

How the Domel Ambush Was Foiled

The incident began when militants, lying in wait, opened indiscriminate fire on a routine police patrol vehicle. Rather than retreating, the police party immediately engaged the attackers, pinning them down until reinforcements arrived.

The Regional Police Officer (RPO) Sajjad Khan and DPO Yasir Afridi confirmed that the arrival of armored personnel carriers (APCs) and specialized rapid response units forced the remaining militants to flee into the surrounding rough terrain. Following a subsequent search operation, the bodies of two unidentified militants were recovered.

Escalating Violence and “Peace Committee” Targeting

This successful police action comes just 24 hours after a tragic targeted killing in the same district. On Sunday, a local peace committee member was shot dead near an Afghan refugee camp in Bannu, while his cousin was left critically injured.

The surge in violence is part of a broader trend in early 2026:

  • January 23: A suicide attack at a wedding in neighboring Dera Ismail Khan killed five people.
  • January 15: Eight militants were neutralized in a major Intelligence-Based Operation (IBO) in Bannu.
  • Technological Shifts: Security forces in the region have reportedly thwarted hundreds of drone-based attacks this month alone, signaling a shift in militant tactics toward coordinated surveillance.

Following the Domel encounter, the KP police have:

  • Increased Patrols: Routine patrolling in the Domel and Fatehkhel areas has been doubled.
  • Identification Process: Bodies of the killed militants have been sent for DNA and biometric verification to identify their network.
  • Search Operations: Ongoing “clearing” operations are active in the outskirts of Bannu to disrupt sleeper cells.
