DERA ISMAIL KHAN— The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) on Saturday eliminated a highly wanted militant commander during a targeted, intelligence-based operation (IBO) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Dera Ismail Khan district.

The slain militant, identified as Khalid alias Commander, was a senior figure within the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan’s (TTP) Zakir Kochi Karwan faction. He was implicated in multiple high-profile attacks, including the targeted killing of CTD Constable Muhammad Ali on March 17, 2025.

Early Morning Standoff on Tank-DI Khan Road

Following precise technical intelligence indicating Khalid’s presence in the Korai area, a specialized CTD Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team launched a raid within the limits of the Shorkot police station.

According to an official CTD statement, the tactical team rapidly surrounded the location early Saturday morning along the main Tank-Dera Ismail Khan Road.

  • Surrender Demands: Law enforcement personnel repeatedly issued warnings and gave the commander multiple opportunities to surrender.
  • The Firefight: The militant refused to surrender and opened indiscriminate fire on the security perimeter. Khalid was killed when the tactical unit returned fire in self-defense.
  • Recovered Cache: A forensic team recovered a 9mm pistol, a hand grenade, and a smartphone from the scene to extract communication data and map local militant networks.

Investigators noted that Khalid had successfully evaded security agencies for over a year by frequently altering his physical appearance, using forged identity documents, and moving fluidly between safe houses.

Escalating Asymmetric Violence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

The southern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly Dera Ismail Khan and Tank, continue to experience heavy security friction. Data from the Center for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) outlines a stark year-on-year rise in militant violence across the province:

Year Total Fatalities in KP Year-on-Year Escalation
2024 1,620 deaths Baseline monitoring period.
2025 2,331 deaths 44% surge in violence; accounted for 82% of the total national rise in fatalities.
2026 (Ongoing) High tactical alert Focused IBOs targeting high-value insurgent field commanders.

A CTD spokesperson confirmed that follow-up raids are actively underway across Dera Ismail Khan to disrupt the local financial and logistical networks that facilitated Khalid’s movements.
