Efforts Underway to Improve Pressure, Resume Normal Gas Supply: SSGC

KARACHI — The Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) on Sunday said it is actively working to address a technical fault that caused a shortfall of around 30 million cubic feet per day (MMCFD) in gas supply, expressing confidence that the deficit will be fully recovered within the next few days.

In a statement, the gas utility said that once normal supply levels are restored, pressure-related issues being faced by consumers are expected to ease, allowing full service to resume for households across Sindh and Balochistan.

An SSGC spokesperson said the situation emerged as an unexpected cold snap swept across much of Pakistan, triggering a sharp rise in domestic gas consumption. Households, particularly in urban areas, increased the use of geysers and space heaters, pushing overall gas demand in the utility’s network up by approximately 10 per cent.

“To manage the initial surge, SSGC diverted around 90MMCFD of re-gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) into the system to stabilise supplies for domestic consumers,” the spokesperson said. However, she added that a further and sudden drop in temperatures in recent days led to an even steeper rise in household demand, with longer cooking hours and pronounced morning and evening usage peaks.

The situation was further aggravated when an upstream technical issue unexpectedly reduced gas supply by an estimated 30MMCFD. This compounded the pressure on the distribution network and resulted in low-pressure complaints from several tail-end localities within the SSGC franchise areas.

In response, the utility activated its government-approved load management plan to prioritise domestic consumers. Under this framework, gas supply to fertiliser plants was curtailed and weekly industrial closures were enforced to redirect available gas toward household use.

The spokesperson emphasised that domestic consumers remain the top priority for the company, in line with directives from the prime minister and the national load management policy. “SSGC is committed to ensuring uninterrupted gas supply to households from 5am to 10pm every day,” she said, adding that special 24-hour teams have been deployed to respond to pressure complaints and technical issues on a priority basis.

SSGC officials reiterated that repair work and technical adjustments are progressing and expressed optimism that the shortfall would be eliminated shortly. Consumers have been advised to use gas judiciously during peak hours as restoration efforts continue.

The utility said it remains in close coordination with upstream suppliers and government authorities to stabilise the system and prevent similar disruptions as winter demand remains high.
